Mamaroneck, New York - Bullseye Resource Center New York is pleased to present Atmospheric Abstraction, a solo exhibition by Marina Hanser. This exhibition is Hanser's first with Bullseye, and is the culmination of her recent residency at the Corning Museum of Glass. Atmospheric Abstraction will be on view June 20 - September 22, 2018.
Originally from Austria, Hanser began working in glass at the age of 15. Since then, her studies have taken her to Italy, and ultimately to Canberra, Australia, where she finished her undergraduate work at the Australian National University (ANU). It was during her time at ANU that Hanser began working with glass to address the idea of grief. The potential for glass to be both scarred through coldworking and healed through heat is, for Hanser, a way to discuss emotional and physical wounds. "My current body of work and research explores the ideas of revealing and concealing," says Hanser. "My ideas are explored through a physical and conceptual connection to the material and its transformative processes." Hanser fuses layers of glass powders to heavily-textured surfaces, resulting in ethereal and atmospheric compositions. "I draw influence from medical imagery, scientific and emotional concepts, and material investigations, as well as my own personal experience with loss," she explains.
Marina Hanser is an international glass artist and educator based in Austria. She started working with glass in 2000, at the age of 15, when she enrolled in the Technical School for Glass in Kramsach, Austria. In 2008, she moved to Italy where she studied at the Vetroricerca Glass School in Bolzano, Italy for two years. In 2010, she moved to Australia to complete a Bachelor of Visual Arts Degree with Honors in the Glass Workshop, School of Art & Design at the Australian National University.
She has received a series of national and international opportunities including residencies at Corning Museum of Glass, Bullseye Glass, Canberra Glassworks and the Australian National University; teaching assistant at Pilchuck Glass School, Corning Museum of Glass, Pittsburgh Glass Center, Bild-Werk Frauenau and Cesty Skla as well as teaching at Berlin Glas e.V. She has received a number of awards including the Glass Prize by Warm Glass UK and the Boronia Prize for Excellence in Glass, and her work was published in the New Glass Review 36. Hanser's work has been exhibited internationally and she was a finalist in the International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa (JP), European Glass Context (DK), National Emerging Art Glass Prize (AU), Fuse Glass Prize (AU) and Hindmarsh Prize (AU). Most recently, Hanser became a finalist in Bullseye Glass Company's Emerge 2018 juried competition.
