Portland, OR - Bullseye Gallery is pleased to present Reflect, a solo exhibition of works by April Surgent.

“My work,” says Surgent, “is an investigation of the inherent link between person and place. Inspiration comes from the familiar everyday moments…caught on a whim or through long observation." The exhibition is a collection of fused and cameo-engraved glassworks that begin with a photograph, combining an ancient technique with a contemporary medium. “The transformation,” Surgent continues, “of a photograph into a relief engraving on glass makes a passing moment permanent.” Surgent sees her works as windows that reveal “a record of our time as I perceive it to be.”

In 2004, April graduated with honors from the Australian National University, Canberra. She subsequently established a studio in her hometown of Seattle, and she continues to exhibit, teach, and lecture internationally. In 2008, she completed a collaborative artist exchange in Bullseye’s factory studios with her mentor, the master Czech engraver Jiri Harcuba. In 2009, she was awarded one of two Neddy Fellowships through the generosity of the Behnke Foundation. In 2010, Surgent will receive the Award for New Talent from UrbanGlass in New York. Her work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington and the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia. Surgent is currently preparing for her first solo museum show at the Bellevue Arts Museum in 2010.
