"Shows of Note - Maurizio Donzelli" by D.K. Row (The Oregonian)

Last November, The Bullseye Connection produced a wonderful performance art spectacle by this internationally acclaimed Italian artist, an Arthur Koestler-like ghost in the machine called "The Drawing Machine." At Bullseye's Pearl District annex, a windowless box the size of two large coffins pumped out on-the-spot drawings based on thoughts and ideas written by strangers.

Of course, the machine was a ruse: Donzelli was inside, punching out a little multicolored riff every several minutes. Donzelli eventually interpreted those drawings as glass pieces, and they're now on view at Bullseye's gallery, along with other pieces the artist made during a recent Bullseye-supported residency. Full of color and lyrical, playful imagery, Donzelli's art reasserts that creativity is not a science but a thoroughly human endeavor. The Bullseye Connection Gallery, 300 N.W. 13th Ave. (D.K.
